Post deployment - day 4

May 10, 2011 | Lieutenant Colonel Kendall Mower

There is not much I can complain about with travel out  of Iraq.  Although I hadn't showered in 48 hours, we lucked out the whole way and had one of the quickest exists from Theater you could expect.  We were able to go standby the whole way.  It started with a standby flight out of Balad Tuesday night.  Fortunately we were able to get out on the 3rd and last flight out even though it was delayed a few hours.  It left very early in the morning and we arrived in Kuwait 90 minutes later.  There were 2 flights out that day from Kuwait, and there were over 115 people going Space A that were wait listed, but we got out that same evening on a flight for Atlanta.

While waiting at Balad we met the other therapy dog in theater "Zach"

The start of a very long traveling process

Several hours into our 10 hour wait at Balad.

We arrived in Atlanta and got on a bus for Ft. Benning.  Friday morning we turned in all our equipment at Ft. Benning and by that afternoon were on a flight back home.  When all was said and done I was home with family within 72 hours of leaving Balad and made it home in time for Mother's Day.

My internal clock is still resetting, but other than that life is beginning to settle back to normal.  We had the military from our clinic as well as our Commander at the airport to greet us.

My first day home was pretty normal - soccer games, lunch (Thai food), Chuck E Cheese (not my choice), and a bike ride/run with the kids.

In the upcoming week I will begin the paperwork and reintegration and hopefully be seeing patients by the following week.
