Being a new Army mom....

April 19, 2012 | Adel Crawford

So when your son is always telling you I am going to serve in the Army when I get old enough, your answer is yes. Though when they turn that age of 17 and bring you the infomation you get that knot in your stomach of panic and being proud. My son asked me to go along on this journey with him and I am happy that I did. He studied hard and got the job he was wanting, he left for Basic in January and graduated March 23, 2012. He is now at school doing great, he has been promoted and working on his next promotion. I sent my son to the Army and they returned a Soldier who is my son, that is all military.  As a mom in January saying goodbye was so hard we didn't want to let go but their is a time we must let go our kids go. Let me tell you we all learned to write letters that you actually send in the mail, I learned some of the lingo and still have more to learn. Letters are so important to our soldier's, and my son who can text with his eyes closed wrote some of the coolest letters. So I got into a support group with other mom's and have become very good friends around the nation. Graduation came slow at times but finally got here, please whatever you do don't miss that. It is one of the most meaningful wonderful things to witness. We got to spend the weekend with my son because he was going to school at the same base he had his Basic at.

We knew that he had options and I learned to understand that until the Army hands your soldier his papers don't listen to anything anyone says, it is called gossip. The Army does not put up with it and you just understand the rules. Well today I got the call of his orders, he is going overseas. Was it a shock, no. Was I sad, yes. Is it an opportunity for my son, for sure but most of all I am so very Proud. I told my son we will get through this in many ways and that it is just the beginning of many hello and goodbyes. I just know that it I will be honest with my son (it is a promise we made to each other) but I will not show him with how much I miss and or my fears for him.

The other promise is we made is that I will be honest about my health to a certain point, I have a life threatening disease. We have made peace about it and have a plan in action. Our plan is that our belief in the Lord is that if anything happens we will see each other in heaven. Everyone has their own version of how to handle this, I just feel the need to blog. I think it will help me get through my time away from my son and may just help someone else. It is important to understand the Army while your soldier is enlisted, we need to support each other, vent, just get it out on the days missing them is to much. I feel if we blog together and not tell our soldier's everything they can do their job while keeping themselves safe along with our country. May God Bless you and have a great day.

Hi Adel Crawford, my name is Kyndal, I just read your blog on Go and I saw that you are a new Army mom and that your son is a soldier wow, well can I tell you something, I am a big supporter, I love to support and pray for our Troops very much, I feel like that is what God has called me to do, and it's something that I love to do and it's something that is very close to my heart. And I wouldn't change that for anything in the world, our Troops have a have a very special place in my heart, I my self am part of a Military family, I had a Grandfather who used to be an American Soldier, before my Grandfather died in a car accident before I was born, he used to be a sailor in the united states Navy, yep and I had a another great Grandfather who used to be an American Soldier, and I have a cousin who used to be an American Soldier. and I also have a wonderful Uncle who lives in Oklahoma, and he used to be an American Soldier, he served in Vietnam, and now he is a Vietnam Veteran, I am so very very proud of my very very all time favorite favorite Uncle, very much so. If you don't mind, and if it's ok with you, can I ask you what your son's name is, I have a note book that I call my Soldier prayer book, and when I get a new Soldier to pray for, I like to write that Soldier 's nae down so I will know who I'm praying for! Please tell your son that I said Thank You to him from me for his service to our country, and please let him know that he has a supporter and a prayer warrior back here at home in Alabama. Your son has my 100 and 110% support and he has my prayers, oh and will you tell your son that I'm sending him a big salute his way? Your son will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Your son's supporter and prayer warrior,

    Hi Adel,

Thanks for sharing your story. My son is getting ready to head to Basic in May. We have talked about him starting his life. He wanted to Join so I will always support him in his choice. I will always tell him how proud I am of him. My husband and I will be at his graduation no matter what. I do remind him that he is starting his life, as he is 22 and still home. We are very close, but I remind him it is his life and now and he has to choose where he is going. I do like the fact that somethings are left unsaid. I never want him to worry about me so I need to be careful how I write things to him. Thanks for your blog and I will pray every day for all of our soldiers who protect us.

      Dear Army Sister (mom),
Welcome to a new journey in your life along with your son because it is a journey for the whole family. Just some thoughts for all of you, not sure if you have military in your family. Ask questions any that you can think of his recruiter and others. I got on the support page of FB where he did his Basic at Fort Sill, it was a lifesaver for me. I learned a lot about the Army and still learning all the different MOS, AIT,BRA, etc. Your son will want to know everything in your letters about family, friends, etc. It will make them homesick but then it makes them feel involved about what is going on during there time away. The letters are so important and his were just as important, I learned to know the exact time my mailman came everyday.
Penny, thank you for your prayers and my prayers for your son.
God Bless and stay Army Strong

my son just left for infantry duty at KAF base in afghanistan. He is 3rd generation army, but myself (his mom) never went overseas. (today is nov.1, 2014). his name is Keenan Grover. He's a great kid (my only) and honestly, I'm scared to death for him. I know that field workers come onto the base to sell food and people have died due to this. Don't know if this is still allowed. hopefully not. I also know that alot of the restaurants and shops on this base are closed, because everyone's leaving. But my son is just getting there. I try not to think about the worst outcomes from him being there, but since there's so many few soldiers there compared to 2 yrs ago, it's hard to stay positive. Please prayer for my son and god bless you for being "you".

My son just arrived at Fort Jackson for bct yesterday. Of course I am nervous, sad, anxious and proud. The hardest part for me is not knowing what is going on. We had a relationship with daily calling and texting if he was not home. I was told I would be receiving a call from him letting me know he arrived safely and that is what I'm waiting for. I miss him so much and I know it's something all families deal with when their loved ones choose to serve this country. I can't wait to hear from him even if for a few seconds. I feel like I just need to communicate with people that know what I'm going through so thank God for this blog.

We need prayers! My only son is leaving to the Army and I'm having a hard time accepting the fact that my son is really leaving. All I pray for is for my son to return home safe and to protect him from all harm where ever he goes. I'm gonna be so lost without him because we were always together and always communicated with each other everyday! Please pray for us!. Thank you!
